What did the UFO look like, shape/size in relation to terrestrial objects/lights/colour :

at first just a ball of light then became a bcigar shape of brilliant light

Did the UFO do any strange things like hover and then zoom off quickly :

I was on a cargo ship and I was on look out on the bridge,it was behind my ship on the port side and I reported the light to the officer of the watch,it looked just like a ships mast light but far away

this was in 1973,I have told a few people but they dont believe me,3 people saw that thing that night and I asked the officer of the watch to put it in the log.I dont know if he did or not.it had accelaration that came up to us in seconds,hovered and took off at a 45 degree angle across the bow of the ship at great speed upwards and was gone, no sound at all and the night was black with no moon and still water,so the size I have no clue.I worked for the Blue funnel line of Liverpool uk and I think the ship was the M.v.Neleus
