    OFFICIAL RECORD

German government says it holds no information on UFO sightings, in reply to AfD inquiry

Germany's AfD party, co-chaired by Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, put a formal written question to the government asking which ministries handle reports of unidentified aerial phenomena, how long records have been kept, and whether standard definitions or reporting channels exist. The Federal Ministry of Defence replied that "there is no information available regarding unidentified aerial phenomena," adding that no agreed terminology is used and that responsibility is split between the interior, transport, defence, research and space ministries. It said there are no dedicated channels for pilots or air traffic controllers to report such sightings. The exchange was published on the German parliament's website this week.

    EXPLAINER

Why some UFO videos appear to show impossible manoeuvres, according to the Pentagon's own case files

A report drawing on the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) explains why footage of unidentified objects often seems to show speeds or turns that defy physics. AARO's published reassessment of the Navy's 2015 'GoFast' video found that forced perspective and motion parallax, where a fast-moving aircraft's own motion makes a distant, slow-moving object look like it is racing past, accounted for the apparent speed. Its review of 2017 infrared footage from Al Taqaddum air base in Iraq similarly concluded that an object which appeared to hover was in fact moving at wind speed, consistent with a cluster of balloons. AARO says unknown distance, camera zoom and infrared sensor artefacts can all distort what a camera or witness records, and that conventional objects such as drones and balloons can produce signatures that look anomalous without multi-sensor data to check them against.
