CSIGHTING DETAILS

1

What did the UFO look like, shape/size in relation to terrestrial objects/lights/colour:

I was working in a local park overlooking Kapiti Island (a large island about 3km offshore) when a glint caught my eye and I saw a globe floating over the sea between my position and Kapiti Island, beneath the skyline of the island. It was either bright silver or mirrored and perfectly round. It was impossible to say how big it was - could have been small and close up or large and further away.
2

Did the UFO do any strange things like hover and then zoom off quickly:

From the time I saw it, the globe was stationary for about 5 seconds - there was a strong southerly wind blowing at the time - then, without moving, it shrank away and disappeared in about half a second. It was just like the dot on the screen of an old black and white TV set.

Any additional comments:

One of my co-workers saw it just as it vanished - he thought it might have been a weather balloon with a radar reflector from the local airport, but I've seen them lots of times and they certainly don't float in one spot in a 20 knot wind. I initially thought it was the sun reflecting off an airplane or glider flying low - there's lots of them in the area - but after the first couple of seconds, it was clear it wasn't an aircraft.

I've only lived in Kapiti for 3 years, but another co-worker, who has a long family history in the area, says that Kapiti Island has a history of ufo activity predating European settlement. Spooky stuff!
