trail of bright red light. i was waiting to see if it was a plane
showing green or white flashing navigation lights.

Did the UFO do any strange things like hover and then zoom off quickly:
seemed to be going faster and faster travelling from west to east
then suddenly disappeared. by the way the sky was copmpletely
