CIA historian's 1997 study said Air Force gave misleading explanations for U-2 related UFO sightings
A 1997 CIA historical study by Gerald K. Haines found that many 1950s UFO sightings were in fact secret U-2 spy plane flights, which Air Force investigators attributed instead to atmospheric phenomena to protect the classified programme. Haines called the official statements 'misleading and deceptive'. Mark Rodeghier, scientific director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies, cites the document to argue that Cold War secrecy, including the Robertson Panel's push to debunk civilian sightings, compromised genuine aerial threat assessments rather than covering up anything extraterrestrial.
