CSIGHTING DETAILS

What did the UFO look like, shape/size in relation to terrestrial objects/lights/colour:

I could not see the UFO, just the trail it left behind, which was a very pale yellow/white fire. It looked a long way off but not like a shooting star, not even as high as a plane at cruising altitude. It was close enough (or big enough) to be able to make out the rough edges of the trail and it had a discernable width to the streak, it wasn't just a fine line.

Did the UFO do any strange things like hover and then zoom off quickly:

Whilst the trail was quick to move across the sky, it was not shooting star quick. It took 2 - 2.5 seconds to cross the sky. The strangest thing about it was that for a moment the trail stopped before continuing. And when I say stopped, I don't mean it was stationary, but that the trail was broken. The object that was creating the trail continued across the sky with no trail for a moment, then the trail started again. The trail went across a massive portion of the sky, it appeared to the left of my field of vision and then went right across to the right of my field of vision. Whilst the stars were out directly above my head this streak appeared much lower down, about 30 degrees above the horizion and appeared to be in front of the glow from light pollution in the distance.

Any additional comments:

I have a passion for astronomy, I have spent a lot of time star gazing and seen a lot of shooting stars. This was not a shooting star (at least not like one I have ever seen before). It's altitude was similar to that of a helicopter and it looked like it was one to two miles away. There seemed to be a real texture to the trail but it was not a rich yellow/red colour like you would expect from a flame trial.
