REPORTED CLAIM
UAP council member says US has a 'preparedness plan' for confirmed non-human intelligence
Dr Jennice Vilhauer, a psychologist on the White House's UAP Science Advisory Council, says officials told the council at a 31 August meeting at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that the US government has a preparedness plan ready should the existence of non-human intelligence ever be confirmed. She stressed that this is not evidence such intelligence exists, but shows the government sees a confirmed discovery as serious enough to plan for. No agency has said which body drew up the plan, what would trigger it or what it covers, and the claim has not been confirmed publicly by ODNI or any other federal agency.

EXPLAINER
Japan shifts from denying UFOs to treating UAP sightings as a security matter
Japan's government has gradually changed its stance on unexplained aerial sightings, according to an overview by Starlust of the country's official record. The cabinet formally denied UFOs existed in 2018, but in 2020 then-defence minister Taro Kono ordered the Self-Defence Forces to log and photograph unexplained sightings. A July 2025 incident, in which four guards at the Genkai nuclear power station reported unexplained drone-like lights, became a catalyst for renewed attention, and in May 2026 Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the government is 'constantly gathering and analysing information with great interest' on the subject. Around 80 lawmakers are now pushing for a dedicated UAP department, though none yet exists, and Japan says it decides case by case whether to release its own files, while coordinating with the United States.
