EXPLAINER
Avi Loeb denies viral claim that aliens would reveal themselves within 16 days
A social media post attributed to Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb claimed aliens could reveal themselves within 16 days. Loeb says he never said this. Speaking on NewsNation's Jesse Weber Live on 8 October, Loeb, who heads the Galileo Project's search for extraterrestrial technology, said the claim was invented to get attention, calling it 'clickbait', and warned that 'some people may believe it'. The account that originated the claim has not been identified, and no new evidence for alien contact accompanied it.

OFFICIAL RECORD
Defense Intelligence Agency moves to compile AAWSAP UFO files for release
The US Defense Intelligence Agency has written to Las Vegas businessman Robert Bigelow setting out its intent to compile and release records from the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program, the secretive UFO research effort it funded between 2008 and 2011. Journalist George Knapp, who has long covered the programme, says the DIA began the process in early October and that no release date has been set, with the work potentially taking years. Many names in the files are expected to be redacted because people who reported encounters did so on the understanding their identities would stay confidential. Programme scientist Colm Kelleher said past government UFO file releases have 'lacked context' because metadata was stripped out before publication.
